Grade 4: Making use of Archival Photos in the classroom.

Teachers will access Archival Photos, that are available for "fair dealing" (see copyright information here___)
and download images on to their destop, print out onto an 8x10 sheet and use image in lesson.


Activate:
Have students discuss what their community looked like in the past. Ask them, "How might we go about finding out what your community looked like before you were born? Brainstorm and make a list with the use of the webspiration tool.

Tip to teachers: (family photos, school/library photos, asking groups/organiizations who have had businesses in your community, newspapers, etc.)

Acquire:

Information sharing/discussion on archival photos - What they are and where to locate. Include this item on a list of "Where do I search for my information on my communities past!" Go through the list and add any other information as it is revealed. Discuss and explain what and where to find archival photos.
The librarian is a person they can seek to find information/photos in their school library.
Some example of one photo archives on the internet. Give the link where they may search and browse for this link.
Student task: To locate community history photos from the classroom list provided by the classroom teacher.
Share and have each student/or small group, in a short of "show and tell" session.
Display all findings on a bulletin board or designated learning centre in the classroom.
